The national population size is approximately a hundred couples.

Habitat

It occurs mainly in coastal lagoons and marshes with abundant emergent vegetation and the main populations are in Ludo, Quinta do Lago ponds, Vilamoura reedbeds and Salgados Lagoon. Also occur in Santo André lagoon, Albufeira lagoon, Boquilobo Mash, Sado Estuary, Tagus Estuary, Arzila Marsh and Madriz Marsh.
