The Alaskan breeding population is estimated at least 2200000 birds at 37 colony sites. The largest colonies are located on Egg, Kaligagan, Aiktak, Vsevidov, and Chagulak islands in the Aleutian Islands.

Habitat

It nests along rocky coastlines and islands, mostly in deep burrows on coastal slopes, but also in crevices on coastal cliffs. It winters in the sea, in North Pacific Ocean.
