This area is located in the north western of Nepal and covers the Rara Lake, in Himalayan range. The park is Nepal's smallest national park.
In the area there are the following habitats: mountains, deep valleys, rivers, fresh water lake, marshes, tussock grasslands, shrubs, temperate and subalpine forests. In the forests the blue pine and fir are predominant, but there are also formations with oak and birch.

Ornithological importance

In this area there is a record of 214 species. Highlight to the Cheer Pheasant (Catreus wallichi), Snow Partridge (Lerwa lerwa), Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus), Tibetan Partridge (Perdix hodgsoniae), Himalayan Snowcock (Tetraogallus himalayensis), Wood Snipe (Gallinago nemoricola), Himalayan Woodpecker (Dendrocopos himalayensis), White-throated Tit (Aegithalos niveogularis), and Kashmir Nuthatch (Sitta cashmirensis).
