Description

This area is located in the southern end of the Rift Valley in Mozambique and includes part of the valley, surrounding plateaus, and Mount Gorongosa above 700 meters.
In the area there are the following habitats: valley, plateaus, mountains, montane grasslands, cliffs, floodplains, streams with riparian vegetation, shallow permanent lake, permanent and temporary freshwater ponds, swamps, savanna, Acacia woodland, Miombo woodland, and montane forests.

Ornithological importance

In this area there is a record of at least 400 species, of which one is an endemic subspecies of the Green-headed Oriole (Oriolus chlorocephalus), which can only be seen in the Gorongosa Mountains. In Gorongosa Mountain occurs also the Narina Trogon (Apaloderma narina), Livingstone's Turaco (Tauraco livingstonii) e Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon (Columba delegorguei). In the Lake Urema there is a large colony of Yellow-billed Stork (Mycteria ibis), African Openbill (Anastomus lamelligerus), Reed Cormorant (Phalacrocorax africanus), African Darter (Anhinga rufa), Great Egret (Casmerodius albus), White-breasted Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo lucidus), Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), and African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus). Highlight also for the occurrence of the African Fish-eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer), Pale Batis (Batis soror), Zululand Batis (Batis fratrum), Plain-backed Sunbird (Anthreptes reichenowi), Swynnerton's Robin (Swynnertonia swynnertoni), White-starred Robin (Pogonocichla stellata), and Black-bellied Glossy-starling (Lamprotornis corruscus).
