Description
This area is located in the autonomous region of Extremadura in Spain, where exists extensive oak forest and one of the largest and best preserved Mediterranean woods and scrubs in Europe.In the area there are the following habitats: mountains, rocky outcrops, deep valleys with steep or rugged slopes, streams, reservoirs, forests (dehesas) and Mediterranean woods and scrubs.
The woods are dominated by the holm oaks and cork oak, but there are also formations with alders and ash trees.
Ornithological importance
In this area there is a record of at least 210 species, of which 141 species breed and 47 are wintering migrants. This area is important because of the high number of breeding birds of prey, highlighting Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus) (300 pairs), Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti), Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Bonelli's Eagle (Aquila fasciatus), Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus), Black Kite (Milvus migrans), Red Kite (Milvus milvus), and Short-toed Snake-eagle (Circaetus gallicus). Also noteworthy, the park is a breeding site for the Black Stork (Ciconia nigra).Geographic information
