This area is in a transition zone between the barrocal and the mountains and includes the valley of the Fonte Benémola River and surrounding areas. This river is fed by springs, allowing water to exist in much of the river throughout the year and on its banks there is a dense riparian gallery. In the area there are the following habitats: watercourse with riparian galleries, farms, scrubs and forests.
The riparian forests are dominated by willow, ash, sugar cane and poplar and the adjacent areas are dominated by the cork oak, holm oak, arbutus and carob tree. The scrublands are dominated by kermes oak and aromatic and medicinal plants like rosemary.

Ornithological importance

In this area there is a record of at least 70 species. Highlight to the Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), Blue Rock-thrush (Monticola solitarius), Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus), Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor) and Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla).
