This area includes the marshland between Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António on the right bank of the Guadiana River, near its mouth and surrounding areas. In the area there are the following habitats: estuary, watercourses with tidal marshes, mudflats, saltpans, extensive dry farmlands and forests. The forests are dominated by the cork oak (montado), but there are also formations with stone pine and maritime pine.

Ornithological importance

In this area there is a record of 186 species of which 169 regularly. Highlight to the Eurasian Thick-knee (Burhinus oedicnemus), Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta), Lesser Short-toed Lark (Calandrella rufescens), Calandra Lark (Melanocorypha calandra), Little Tern (Sterna albifrons), Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), Ruff (Philomachus pugnax), Great Spotted Cuckoo (Clamator glandarius), Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), Audouin's Gull (Larus audouinii), Jack Snipe (Lymnocryptes minimus), Collared Pratincole (Glareola pratincola), Spotted Redshank (Tringa erythropus), Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax), Common Shelduck (Tadorna tadorna), Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus) and Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata).
