This area includes the Alverca and Forte da casa saltpans and adjacent areas and is located in the Tagus estuary.
In the area there are the following habitats: saltpans, farms, streams, ponds of fresh, brackish or saline water and scrubs.

Ornithological importance

This area is one of the most important breeding sites in the Tagus estuary for aquatic birds, especially the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina), Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta), Little Tern (Sterna albifrons), and Collared Pratincole (Glareola pratincola). It is an important area in trans-Saharan flyway of passerine birds, mainly in autumn and as wintering area.
