New Zealand is an island country in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Its territory encompasses two main islands (North and South Islands) and several small islands, archipelagos and islets such the Stewart Island and the Chatham, Antipodes, Auckland e Kermadec archipelagos.
The high geographic isolation resulted in a unique ecosystem, whose most distinctive characteristics consisted in the absence of mammals and birds with high endemism.
Their national network of protected areas covers approximately 30% of the territory.

Highlight to the Rifleman (Acanthisitta chloris), Saddleback (Philesturnus carunculatus), New Zealand Bellbird (Anthornis melanura), Stitchbird (Notiomystis cincta), Kea (Nestor notabilis), Antipodes Parakeet (Cyanoramphus unicolor), Tui (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae), Black-billed Gull (Larus bulleri), Kokako (Callaeas cinereus), Black Robin (Petroica traversi), Blue Duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos), Brown Teal (Anas chlorotis), Wrybill (Anarhynchus frontalis), New Zealand Snipe (Coenocorypha aucklandica), Little Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx owenii), and Northern Brown Kiwi (Apteryx mantelli). Equally of notice is that in the Exclusive Economic Zone occur 140 seabirds (in the world there are 359 seabirds). Of these, 36 of the 86 breeding species breeds only in New Zealand. Highlight to the Sooty Shearwater (Puffinus griseus), Black-winged Petrel (Pterodroma nigripennis), Fairy Prion (Pachyptila turtur), White-faced Storm-petrel (Pelagodroma marina), Common Diving-petrel (Pelecanoides urinatrix), White-capped Albatross (Thalassarche steadi), White-chinned Petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis), Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome), and Grey-backed Storm-petrel (Garrodia nereis).
