Description

This sea area is located in the North Atlantic Ocean and includes the internal waters, territorial waters and exclusive economic zone of mainland Portugal. It is an important sea area due to the large number of seabirds that use as staging, wintering and breeding area. In this area occurs regularly at least 43 species of seabirds and have been identified 4 marine IBA: Figueira da Foz, Berlengas, Cabo Raso and Ria Formosa. The main colonies are in the archipelago of Berlengas (5 species) and the Barreta Island in Ria Formosa (3 species).

Ornithological importance

In mainland Portugal breeds regularly 8 seabird species, highlighting the Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea), Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis), and Audouin's Gull (Larus audouinii). The Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus), Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus), European Storm-petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus), Razorbill (Alca torda), Great Skua (Catharacta skua), Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus), Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicensis), Black Scoter (Melanitta nigra) and many other species use the EEZ as wintering or staging area.
